3 ½ stars

A very uneven Cohen Brothers movie that combines some spectacularly entertaining and funny side scenes with a dull central story about a post-war Hollywood studio “fixer” (Josh Brolin) who has to track down the kidnapped star (George Clooney) of the studio’s Roman epic. That plotline plods, but the movie is still worth seeing for the following: A British director (Ralph Fiennes) coaches his last-minute replacement lead, cowboy Hobie Doyle (newcomer Alden Ehrenreich) on how to say the phrase: “Would that it were so simple.” Even it you saw it in the trailer you’ll still howl. Plus with almost no lines but lots of booty-shaking Channing Tatum makes you forget about Magic Mike.
