LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

4 stars

A crisp comedy of manners based on the Jane Austen novella “Lady Susan”. Despite the unappealingly bland title, the movie comes across more like Dangerous Liaisons crossed with Oscar Wilde rather than a typical Jane Austen flick. In fact it is truly a bit of a parody of films like Pride and Prejudice, with the characters introduced with formal dramatis personae headshots, and pompous literary and Biblical allusions repeated several times for comedic effect. As often in these films, despite the theme of women chafing against the burden of their lot, the female characters rule, the male characters being naïve, stupid or handsome sex objects.
