A delightful animated film about singing and expressing yourself, set in a fictional California city populated entirely by animals. Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) is a koala bear who has had hard luck keeping the theatre he inherited from his father running after a string of flops. To turn things around he is inspired to host a singing competition, and when his elderly lizard assistant accidently adds a couple of zeroes to the advertised prize money, he gets a huge response. After a hilarious audition sequence straight out of American Idol, we get to know our main characters: Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) a homemaker pig and mother to 25 piglets, Johnny (Taron Egerton) a sensitive gorilla trying to move out of his gangster Dad’s shadow, Meena, a stage-shy elephant, Mike, a white mouse channeling the Rat Pack, and Ash (Scarlett Johansson), a teenage punk porcupine.
With inventively staged sequences and fantastic vocal performances, this movie has a bit of everything including a great original song “Set It All Free” performed by Johansson.
