KURSK

2 1/2 stars

Though I enjoyed the performances by Matthias Schoenaerts and Colin Firth in this movie, a fictionalized version of the sinking and rescue efforts of the Russian submarine Kursk in 2000, the movie suffers from serious story problems.  It’s awkward to structure your movie as a thriller when it is based on real historical events of which the outcome is well known. I think in other hands the movie might better emphasize themes and symbolism rather than how Danish director Thomas Vinterberg merely goes for movie-typical tension related to the rescue efforts.
